3Bee designs and produces IoT monitoring systems for farming animals, in order to change the way in which they are managed, moving from the abuse of chemical and antibiotic treatments to data driven solutions. Our first focus has been bees, since our team has a particular knowledge of the beekeeping sector. Bees are essential for the environment, the ecosystem, and human life. More than 80% of the world’s food supply depends on bees’ pollination activity. Unfortunately, bees are constantly decreasing because of many factors, such as pesticides, poor diet, pathogens, diseases, trauma related to poor beehive management, and climate change. At the present day, the only method to cure and manage farming animals, bees included, is using chemical and antibiotic treatments, but this procedure isn’t working anymore and it is creating a growing antibiotic resistance.
3Bee was founded in 2016 by two young researchers. Niccolo Calandri, PhD in Electronics, collaborated with the MIT in Boston and the Center of quantum Computing and Communication in Sydney during his doctorate has. Riccardo Balzaretti, PhD in Biology, has collaborated with the CBNI lab at the UCD in Dublin during his doctorate and he is a professional beekeeper.
Merging electronic sensors and biological analyses, we have designed and produced Hive-Tech, an IoT monitoring and diagnostic system for hives. The device is equipped with sensors gathering information about important biological parameters, such as weight, temperature, humidity, and sound, that sent to our cloud platform, where they are stored and analyzed. With all the data collected, predictive algorithms are developed. They are able to predict and prevent bees diseases and anomalies, thus reducing mortality rate. These algorithms involve machine learning strategy, allowing a real improvement of the beekeeping industry and effective change of the ways in which apiaries are managed, moving from the use of chemicals and antibiotics to a data-driven and chemical-free solution. Beekeepers can monitor in real time their hives and better manage their activity, planning interventions and inspections only when necessary on the basis of the data provided.
There are more than 6 million beekeepers worldwide and approximately 50 million beehives for a Total Addressable Market (TAM) of approximately 6 Billion €.. Major interested countries are Italy, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Iran, the USA, China, Romania, Hungary, and Russia. Considered in total, Europe is the second largest honey manufacturer in the world.
Our revenue stream is two-sided. Our devices are sold to beekeepers and beekeeper related companies, offering them a real service to improve their production, reduce their costs and better manage their apiaries. Furthermore, the data collected by our device will be very interesting for chemical and pharmaceutical companies, which are committed in finding new solutions and to develop in a more sustainable way. Our devices will be a invaluable tool to collect information that would be otherwise inaccessible and prohibitive.
At the moment, we are reaching other markets in collaboration with Bayer and Tim. Our system can be easily adapted to other farming animals, such as pigs and broiler. In this way, we will also tackle another great problem, known as antibiotic resistance. This phenomenon is a real threat to human and animal health, because it is making the medicines we are now using completely ineffective. Using IoT monitoring and diagnostic systems, diseases and anomalies can be early detected and efficiently tackled, allowing a considerable reduction of chemicals and antibiotics.
